Class Descriptions
Ballet
Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread and highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. Ballet has been influential globally and has defined the foundational techniques, which are used in many other dance genres and cultures.
Jazz
Jazz Dance is a performance style that originated in the U.S. in the early 20th century. It can refer to vernacular jazz, Broadway, or dramatic jazz, though the term is often used loosely and may not relate directly to jazz music. Since the 1940s, it has described the work of choreographers like Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins in Hollywood and Broadway. By the 1990s, it also encompassed college dance classes using pop and jazz music. Some classes incorporate electroswing, blending jazz with electronic dance music.
Tap
Tap is a form of dance that uses the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion; it is often accompanied by music. Tap dancing can also be performed with no musical accompaniment; the sound of the taps is its own music.
Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a range of street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called "new style"—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called "jazz-funk". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a group of sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, artistry and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. At Stage West, we primarily focus on flexibility, balance, and strength in our tricks and skills.
Interested in Competing?
Join the stage west competition team!
Competitive dance is a great way to boost a child's confidence. At Stage West, we care about equipping your child with the appropriate technique, creativity, and showmanship to succeed. We deeply care that each student feels prepared to go on stage and give it their all.
Competitive dancers are required to take class during the week and attend a rehearsal session. Students can participate in as many dances as they feel comfortable with, but are placed based on the teachers' expertise.
There are associated fees with competing, including, but not limited to: rehearsal fees, registration fees, costume fees, and more.
If your child is interested in competing or if you have any questions, contact us today!
